Sam Burton is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the Sheffield Institute of Law and Justice, part of the College of Social Sciences and Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. He joined the university in 2004 after completing his LLB (Hons) in Law and later earned a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. His teaching spans undergraduate and post-graduate levels, covering modules such as Land Law, Public Law and Human Rights, and Legal Perspectives on Criminal Justice. He is known for developing e-learning resources to enhance students' legal referencing skills.
His research focuses on the human rights implications of counter-terrorism measures, particularly preventive strategies adopted post-9/11. He has presented papers on this topic at national and international conferences. In 2013, he received the College Inspirational Teacher Award. He also supervises research projects and theses, including works on state-sanctioned torture and coercive interrogation.
Beyond academia, Burton acts as a book reviewer for publishers in land/property law and anti-terrorism law. His work bridges legal education innovation and critical analysis of national security policies.
