Sally Pias is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at New Mexico Tech, specializing in molecular biophysics and cellular physiology. She holds a PhD in Chemistry with a Biochemistry specialization from New Mexico State University (2009), an MA in Jewish Studies and a B.A. in Chemistry and Religion from Emory University (2003/1998). Dr. Pias leads a research group focused on high-performance computing studies of oxygen transport mechanisms in tissues, membrane lipid dynamics, and mitochondrial function. Her work addresses energy metabolism, tumor hypoxia, radiation therapy optimization, and drug delivery. She has been active in ISOTT since 2015 and received the Melvin H. Knisely Award (2016). She mentors graduate/undergrad students in molecular simulation techniques, data analysis, and scientific communication, with alumni pursuing careers in academia, medicine, and industry.
Research interests include cholesterol's role in membrane oxygen permeability, mitochondrial permeability transition pore regulation, and biophysical mechanisms of oxygen diffusion. Her lab investigates lipid composition effects in cancer tissues, ATP synthase ion channel behavior, and caveolae's oxygen buffering role. Collaborations bridge computational modelling with experimental biophysics, emphasizing translational applications in health sciences.
Selected awards include ISOTT's Young Investigator Award. Her group's work has been published in Biophysical Journal, Journal of Physiology, and Applied Magnetic Resonance. Ongoing projects explore vascular/extracellular oxygen measurement discrepancies and protein-lipid anchored systems simulations.
