Prof. Dr. Christoph von Ballmoos serves as a full Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Bern since February 2025. Previously, he held the position of Associate Professor since August 2017 and Assistant Professor Tenure Track since April 2014. His research group focuses on membrane protein function and reconstitution, with particular emphasis on bioenergetic processes.
His educational background includes:
- Diploma studies in Biochemistry at ETH Zürich (1995-2000)
- PhD on ATP synthase at ETH Zürich's Institute of Microbiology (2001-2005)
- Post-Doc and Group Leader at ETH Zürich (2005-2008)
- SNF Fellow at Stockholm University (2008-2011)
- Principal Investigator at Stockholm University (2012-2014)
Prof. von Ballmoos's research centers on simplifying complex natural membrane systems by reconstituting purified components into lipid bilayers to study molecular mechanisms of cellular processes. His work spans bioenergetics, membrane protein reconstitution, respiratory enzymes, proton transport mechanisms, and antibiotic resistance pathways. His laboratory develops innovative methods for membrane protein analysis that bridge structural biology and cellular physiology.
Analysis of his recent publications (2022-2025) reveals a consistent focus on bioenergetic processes with increasing sophistication in membrane protein manipulation techniques. His work spans fundamental biophysical investigations of proton-coupled transport mechanisms, structural studies of membrane proteins, and applied research in energy production systems including the groundbreaking discovery of atmospheric hydrogen-driven ATP synthesis. The research integrates structural biology, biochemical reconstitution, and physiological analysis to understand energy transduction across biological membranes.
His laboratory maintains active collaborations with institutions in Australia and New Zealand, as evidenced by the July 2025 media release about organisms producing energy from air. The group has also collaborated with Stockholm University on oxygen radical defense mechanisms as noted in the June 2018 media release.
Prof. von Ballmoos leads a research group focused on membrane protein biochemistry, operating from office U171 at the University of Bern. His team utilizes advanced techniques in protein purification, membrane reconstitution, and structural analysis to investigate fundamental questions in bioenergetics and cellular transport mechanisms.
