معرفی
J. Sakari Salonen is an Academy Research Fellow and Docent at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Department of Geosciences and Geography. His research focuses on understanding past climate dynamics and their impacts on ecosystems, particularly in northern Europe.
- Academy Research Fellow
- Docent, Department of Geosciences and Geography
- Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Geosciences
- Recipient of the 2021 Lauri Jäntti Prize
Research interests include:
- Paleoclimatology: Reconstructing Holocene and Late Glacial climate variability using proxy data like pollen and plant macrofossils.
- Numerical modeling: Simulating past climate events to identify drivers and patterns.
- Environmental Science: Linking climate changes to ecosystem responses, particularly carbon cycling and lake dynamics.
- Paleontology: Analyzing Neogene microfossils to understand geological history.
Scientific contributions span interdisciplinary studies on abrupt climate events, moisture variability, and Neogene fossil discoveries. His work often integrates proxy data with modeling to address climate conundrums during deglaciation periods.
Scientific awards:
- Lauri Jäntti Prize (2021) for best non-fiction book
Grants and projects include funding from the Research Council of Finland (Academy of Finland) and the Finnish Cultural Foundation. He leads initiatives like Climate shocks: exploring abrupt events in the palaeoclimate record and contributes to Arctic lake biodiversity studies.
