Sabine Verschueren is a full Professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. She serves as Head of the Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Research Group and maintains active affiliations with multiple KU Leuven institutes including DigiSoc (Institute for Digital Society), LC&Y (Institute for Child and Youth), LISS (Institute for Sports Sciences), and LKI (Cancer Institute).
Her research spans multiple critical areas in rehabilitation science, with particular focus on musculoskeletal disorders, knee osteoarthritis, and the intersection of sleep medicine with chronic pain conditions. Dr. Verschueren's work significantly contributes to childhood cancer survivorship rehabilitation, exploring the connections between physical fitness, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. Her innovative research integrates digital health technologies to develop personalized rehabilitation approaches.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research that bridges biomechanics, digital health monitoring, and clinical rehabilitation. Her work increasingly focuses on precision medicine approaches for osteoarthritis, the muscle-brain connection in aging populations, and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies for childhood cancer survivors. The publications demonstrate a consistent emphasis on developing objective measurement tools and evidence-based interventions.
Dr. Verschueren serves in multiple leadership roles including as promoter for major research projects like WeCARE (digital biopsychosocial approach for childhood cancer care), knee osteoarthritis studies, and cardiorespiratory fitness research in cancer survivors. She actively supervises graduate students and collaborates extensively across multiple disciplines.
Her laboratory work centers around the Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Research Group, which investigates pathomechanics of knee joints, develops digital monitoring technologies, and explores cognitive-behavioral approaches for pain and sleep management. The group maintains strong connections with pediatric oncology, sports medicine, and geriatric rehabilitation fields.
