Professor Sabine Verhulst is a distinguished scholar of Italian literature at Ghent University in Belgium. She has been teaching Italian Literature and Culture at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy since 1994, and is currently affiliated with the Department of Literary Studies. Previously, she directed the Department of Romance Languages from 2008 to 2010, and taught at Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1990 to 2002.

- Rhetorical and poetic theory
- Literature and history of ideas
- Italy and Grand Tour travelers
- The works of Giacomo Leopardi
- The works of Vitaliano Brancati
- Writers and political ideology (1930-1955)
Professor Verhulst leads the POWEZIE (Study of Poetry) research group and has supervised numerous research projects spanning ecopoetics, British ode history, Italian journalism, and literary imagination in post-war Italian prose. Her recent publications focus on Dante's Divine Comedy, Giacomo Leopardi, and Philippe Jaccottet, demonstrating her continued engagement with major figures in Italian and European literature.
Her notable recognitions include:
- Election to the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (2014)
- Membership on the Research Council of Ghent University (Commission Alpha) since 2013
Professor Verhulst has supervised PhD students including Jessy Carton (2015), Sarah Decombel (2012), and Alessia Vallarsa (2010). Her research is supported by various grants that have enabled extensive projects on Italian literature and its intersections with other cultural domains.
She leads the POWEZIE research group which focuses on poetry studies within the broader context of literary research at Ghent University.
