Prof. Dr. Sabine Obermaier is an Adjunct Professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, affiliated with the Department of Early German Literature within the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology. As Academic Director, she leads research and teaching initiatives focusing on medieval German literature and interdisciplinary projects. Her work bridges historical narratology, medieval lyric poetry, and the role of animals in medieval texts.
Education: Born in 1963, she studied German Philology, Philosophy, and Theater Studies at Universities of Mainz and Vienna, earning a Magister Artium (1987), PhD (1992), and Habilitation (2002). She was appointed Adjunct Professor in 2009.
Research Projects
- Co-founder of the animaliter-Lexikon, an interdisciplinary online encyclopedia on animals in medieval literature.
- Developed the Mittelhochdeutsch aktiv online course (textbook and workbook) to teach Middle High German.
- Organized exhibitions like Parzival intermedial and Zwischen Herz und Verstand, exploring medieval literary reception in modern contexts.
Grants & Collaboration
- Received funding from the GLK for the project Mediävistik trifft Job & Karriere, linking medieval studies with career development.
