Prof. Dr. Uta Störmer-Caysa is an emeritus professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, holding the Chair of German Literature of Older Periods within the German Institute. Her academic journey includes a doctorate (1985, Leipzig) and habilitation (1996, Erlangen), with prior positions at Leipzig, Göttingen, Erlangen, and Münster before joining Freiburg (2000) and Mainz (2002). She is a corresponding member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and co-leads the Middle High German Dictionary project.
Her research focuses on medieval mysticism, narratology, and the interplay between philosophy and poetry. Key contributions include monographs on medieval narratives and mysticism, edited volumes on historical poetics, and critical editions of medieval texts like Kudrun and Meister Eckhart’s sermons.
Störmer-Caysa supervises doctoral research, hosting annual colloquia on themes such as numbers, taboos, and silence. She has guided four completed dissertations and currently oversees eight more. Her publications span over three decades, addressing topics from Augustine’s concept of time to textual criticism of medieval manuscripts.
Academically active in editorial roles and international collaborations, she contributes to interdisciplinary medieval studies, bridging literary analysis with cultural and philosophical contexts. Her work emphasizes philological rigor and historical poetics, influencing both German and comparative literature scholarship.
