Prof. Dr. Sabine Nessel is a full professor of Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin's Institute of Theatre Studies (Institut für Theaterwissenschaft). She holds leadership roles, including Acting Director of the Institute (2017–2019 and 2019–2023), and oversees the Master's program in Film Studies. Her research focuses on Environmental Humanities, Cultural Animal Studies, film theory, and feminist perspectives. She has held academic positions at institutions like Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University of Vienna, and her work bridges cinema, ecology, and cultural theory. Nessel is a principal investigator in DFG-funded projects and contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like the Excellence Cluster 'Temporal Communities.' Her editorial work includes journals like Nach dem Film and book series on Cultural Animal Studies. She has authored monographs on cinema and modernity, such as Zoo und Kino als Schauanordnungen der Moderne. Her recent research explores film credits, eco-cinema, and the representation of non-human animals in media.
