Bettina Braun is an associate professor (apl. Prof. Dr.) at the Department of Modern History, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where she has been a research associate since 2010. Her academic career includes positions at the University of Konstanz, University of Paderborn, and the Institute of European History in Mainz.
Education:
- 1982–1989: Studied History, Russian, and Political Science at the University of Konstanz
- 1995: PhD from the University of Konstanz with the dissertation "Die Eidgenossen, das Reich und das politische System Karls V."
- 2007: Habilitation at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz with "Princeps et episcopus. Studien zur Funktion und zum Selbstverständnis der nordwestdeutschen Fürstbischöfe nach dem Westfälischen Frieden"
Research Interests:
Bettina Braun’s research focuses on the history of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, particularly the relationship between the Swiss Confederation and the Empire, the Germania Sacra, and female rule in the early modern period. She also explores the political and constitutional history of the Old Reich, the history of the Imperial Church, and the development of early modern statehood.
Scientific Awards:
- Lise-Meitner Habilitation Fellowship (2001–2004)
Supervision and Projects: Since 2021, she has been involved in the project "Mainz Models for Digitally Enhanced Teaching and Learning (ModeLL-M)". She has supervised numerous doctoral, master's, and bachelor's theses covering topics from early modern politics to gender studies.
Additional Roles: She is a member of the Committee for Teaching and Study of Faculty 07 and serves as a contact person for students facing issues related to right-wing extremism, racism, misogyny, and ableism.
