Sabine Breitsameter is a Professor of Sound and Media Culture at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany) since 2006. She also holds roles as Research Chair for Artistic Research and Media Aesthetic Practice, and Director of the Master’s program in International Media Cultural Work. Her academic contributions focus on soundscape studies, acoustic ecology, and media aesthetics, exemplified by her 2023 second edition of Die Ordnung der Klänge (The Ordering of Sounds), a German translation of R. Murray Schafer’s seminal work. She emphasizes reinterpreting Schafer’s ideas through an aesthetics of care, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to sound and environmental awareness.
Breitsameter’s career spans over three decades, including roles as a dramaturg, radio director, and visiting professor at the University of the Arts Berlin (2004–2008). She actively contributes to academic communities as Co-President of the Hessian Film and Media Academy (hFMA) and a member of the German Music Council. Her 2024 guest lecture at SFU’s School of Communication explored contemporary relevance of Schafer’s theories in addressing modern ecological and cultural challenges.
Her leadership extends to organizing international conferences like The Global Composition (2012, 2018), and she has published extensively on media ecology and sound studies. Breitsameter’s work bridges artistic practice, pedagogy, and critical theory, positioning her as a key figure in transnational sound studies and media cultural research.
