R. Murray Schafer was a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Simon Fraser University (1965–1975). He pioneered soundscape studies, founding the World Soundscape Project (1969) to explore the acoustic environment’s ecological balance. Schafer held an honorary Doctor of Laws from SFU (1997) and inspired global research on acoustic ecology.
