R. Murray Schafer was a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Simon Fraser University (1965–1975). He pioneered soundscape studies, founding the World Soundscape Project (1969) to explore the acoustic environment’s ecological balance. His work emphasized interdisciplinary approaches, blending environmental science, media studies, and art. Schafer held an honorary Doctor of Laws from SFU (1997) and inspired global research on acoustic ecology.
Research interests: Soundscape composition, environmental acoustics, and the intersection of sound with culture and urban design. Key contributions include The Tuning of the World and The Vancouver Soundscape. The R. Murray Schafer Soundscape Award, supported by the Glenfraser Endowment, perpetuates his legacy in acoustic communication studies.
