Semiray Yücebaş is an Associate Professor at Gaziantep University's Faculty of Communication, Department of Journalism. She has held this position since 2023, following her tenure as a Doctor Lecturer (2014-2018) and Lecturer (2012-2014) at the same institution. Her academic career spans over a decade in Turkish higher education with a specialization in communication studies and journalism.
Dr. Yücebaş earned her doctorate in Journalism from Ege University's Institute of Social Sciences (2007-2013) after completing her undergraduate studies in Journalism at Ege University's Faculty of Communication (2000-2006).
Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, media, and conservative values in Turkish society. She has extensively examined how conservative aesthetics manifest in daily life through media channels, with particular attention to women's representation in advertising, journalism practices, and digital platforms. Her work on conservative fashion bloggers as creators of aesthetic experience, women journalists in local media, and the representation of Syrian refugees in Gaziantep's press demonstrates her methodological approach using critical discourse analysis to uncover underlying power structures.
Dr. Yücebaş's scholarly output reveals a consistent trajectory examining conservative values in Turkish media and society. Her publications demonstrate expertise in analyzing gender representation, particularly how motherhood and women's roles are constructed in advertising and news media. She has made significant contributions to understanding local journalism practices in Gaziantep, with particular attention to how conservative ideologies shape media content and professional practices. Her recent work shows increased focus on contemporary issues such as refugee representation and the impact of conservative values on upper-middle-class women's daily experiences.
She has successfully supervised six master's theses on topics including cultural exchange spaces, women's struggle for hegemony through social assistance, stereotyping of women in television commercials, self-censorship in local press, gender roles' impact on female journalists, and conservatism in consumer culture.
Dr. Yücebaş has participated in three significant research projects: 'Covid-19 Gender Impact Assessment' (2021), 'Social Education on the Move' (2021-2023, European Union-funded), and 'Strengthening Institutional Capacity of Local Media Organizations in the GAP Region' (2018). She has also served as an editor for STRATA: İlişkisel Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi since 2023.
