معرفی
S. Mark Tompkins is a Professor at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, serving as Director and Principal Investigator of the Center for Influenza Disease and Emergence Research (CIDER) within the NIAID Centers of Excellence in Influenza Research and Response (CEIRR) Network. His work bridges Infectious Diseases, Immunology, and Virology, leveraging Animal Models of Human Disease to study respiratory pathogens.
- Doctorate in Immunology, Emory University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, National Multiple Sclerosis Society
- Former FDA research at Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research
- Joined UGA faculty in 2005
Dr. Tompkins' research focuses on host-pathogen interactions and influenza vaccine development, particularly examining:
- Pathogen-pathogen interactions in respiratory co-infections
- Vaccine-elicited immunity and immunopathology
- Receptor binding specificity of zoonotic influenza viruses
- Novel adjuvant platforms for broad protection
- Computational design of thermostable viral fusion proteins
- Pandemic risk assessment for emerging pathogens
His recent publications highlight advancements in bovine H5N1 receptor analysis, neuraminidase-based vaccines, and computational protein stabilization, with collaborative work across Influenza A/B and canine respiratory viruses. Awards include the Senior Fulbright Scholar Award (2012) at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.
As part of the Center for Vaccines and Immunology, Dr. Tompkins leads multidisciplinary teams in the CEIRR Network, advancing influenza research through experimental models and translational studies that directly inform pandemic preparedness strategies.
