Rémi Zallot

Dr Rémi Zallot is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry within the Department of Life Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research focuses on elucidating the biological functions of uncharacterised genes in infectious pathogens, particularly non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), to identify novel drug targets and biotechnological applications. He employs a multidisciplinary approach integrating bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology. Key areas include antibiotic resistance mechanisms, metabolic pathway analysis, and the development of genomic enzymology tools.

Education: PhD in Biochemistry and Plant Biology from Université de Bordeaux (specializing in Arabidopsis lipase characterization), followed by postdoctoral roles at the University of Florida (B vitamin metabolism) and University of Illinois (Enzyme Function Initiative tools). He held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at Swansea University for the deCrYPtion project.

Research interests include NTM pathogenesis, enzyme function discovery, and bioinformatics tool development. Current projects include the STEROSPRING award studying NTM sterol catabolism and contributions to the EFI web tools. Awards include the Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship.

Teaching responsibilities include leading the Biomedical Cell Biology module and contributing to Medical Microbiology courses. He supervises undergraduate and Master’s students, as well as a Postdoctoral Research Associate under the SteroSpring grant.
