Ryan Woolrych is a Professor in Ageing and Urban Studies at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and the Urban Institute. He serves as Director of the Institute for Place, Environment and Society. Previously, he held roles at the Gerontology Research Centre in Vancouver, Canada, and joined Heriot-Watt in 2014 as an Associate Professor in Health and Well-being.
His research focuses on intersections between ageing and place, targeting inequities for marginalized groups through participatory methodologies. Key areas include climate resilience in age-friendly cities, Roma community health, and transnational urban studies. He has led major grants including a £1.2M AHRC project on RomaPlaceAge and ESRC-funded studies on climate change impacts on ageing.
Publications emphasize participatory approaches (e.g., co-researching toolkits, place-based interventions), with recent work addressing Roma communities, heritage environments, and smart city solutions. Media engagement includes BBC and STV coverage on Roma health inequities and climate resilience strategies.
Grants and advising highlight his leadership in UKRI-funded initiatives, including projects in Brazil, India, and the UK. He collaborates internationally to advance SDGs related to sustainable cities (SDG 11) and reduced inequalities (SDG 10).
