Ryan Walker is a Professor in the Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Saskatchewan, affiliated with the College of Arts and Science. He holds additional roles as a Graduate Supervisor and Adjunct Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Urban and Regional Planning. His research focuses on Indigenous urbanism, downtown revitalization, age-friendly communities, and urban design, emphasizing reconciliation, spatial justice, and settler-Indigenous relations.
Walker earned his B.A. (Urban and Regional Studies) from the University of Lethbridge, M.A. (Planning) from the University of Waterloo, and Ph.D. (Geography) from Queen’s University. His leadership roles include Associate Dean of the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Chair of the Meewasin Valley Authority board.
His research integrates applied projects with Indigenous communities, urban policy analysis, and downtown planning initiatives such as the Saskatoon City Centre Plan. Awards include the Canadian Institute of Planners' Award of Merit (2021) and recognition for contributions to urban design and Indigenous planning.
Key publications address Indigenous urban planning frameworks, age-friendly strategies, and the role of public space in fostering inclusive urban environments. His teaching includes advanced courses on urban geography and Indigenous community planning. Current projects involve CIHR-funded research on Indigenous placemaking and age-friendly initiatives.
