Ryan W. Kirk serves as Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies and Chair of the Department of Environmental Studies at Elon University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds joint appointments in both the Department of History & Geography and the Department of Environmental Studies, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to environmental scholarship. His office is located in Lindner Hall - Arts & Sciences, where he teaches courses ranging from introductory geography to specialized GIS applications and environmental management.

Kirk's research centers on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to environmental challenges, with particular focus on the Southern Appalachian Mountains region. His work spans forest management, urban and rural land development policy, water resources management, and wildlife ecology. He has developed innovative research using Twitter and smartphone location data to study community interactions and consumer behavior, demonstrating his commitment to applying spatial analysis to contemporary issues. Kirk frequently collaborates across disciplines with colleagues in Communications, Psychology, Sport and Event Management, Public Health, Economics, Political Science, and History.
His recent scholarly output shows a consistent focus on land use change patterns, water quality management in the Piedmont region, and forest ecology of the Elon University Forest. Kirk has pioneered research on the internationalization of U.S. college soccer, using this global sport as a lens to examine broader patterns of globalization.
Kirk maintains an active advising role with numerous students, particularly those interested in environmental management, water resources, forest ecology, urban planning, and GIS applications. His teaching philosophy prioritizes critical thinking, resourcefulness, and subject matter knowledge, resulting in consistently strong student evaluations across his courses.
He coordinates the GIS Interdisciplinary Program at Elon and leads multiple current research projects including land use change in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, water quality management in the Piedmont Region, forest ecology studies in the Elon University Forest, and applications of GIS across academic disciplines.
