Ryan Samuel

Ryan Samuel is an Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Swine Specialist at South Dakota State University (SDSU), Department of Animal Science. His research focuses on improving swine production efficiency through feed and management technologies, with expertise in swine nutrition and biosecurity. He operates a 1,200-head wean-to-finish research facility adhering to commercial industry standards.

Education:

• B.S. in Honors Chemistry, University of Prince Edward Island (2003)
• M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Science, University of Alberta (2008, 2011)

Research Interests: Optimizing feed efficiency in swine, particularly with high DDGS diets and branched-chain amino acids. Investigates water treatments and dietary interventions via advanced feeding systems like the Feedlogic ComDel Innovation setup. Emphasizes practical applications for South Dakota pork producers.

Grants & Extension: Led a project on feed efficiency funded by NPB #21-103. Provides Extension services including PQA Plus certification training and TQA certification. Previously worked at Alltech’s Center for Animal Nutrigenomics.

Labs/Teams: Manages the SDSU Swine Education and Research Facility, featuring biosecure, tunnel-ventilated barns with advanced feeding and monitoring systems.
