Benoit St. Pierre is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University (SDSU). His research focuses on the microbiomes of gut environments in food animals, particularly investigating how dietary changes and additives influence microbial communities in livestock such as bison, swine, and dairy calves. He is affiliated with the Animal Science Complex in Brookings, SD.
Research interests include rumen microbiology, gut health in swine and ruminants, and the application of metagenomic techniques to understand microbial metabolism. His work spans topics like feed additive efficacy, probiotic impacts, and the role of microbial communities in optimizing animal nutrition and health.
Recent studies highlight the effects of grain-based diets on bison microbiomes, the impact of early weaning on swine gut microbiota, and the potential of fecal microbiota transplantation in dairy calves. His research often involves collaborations with industry partners to address practical challenges in livestock production.
Publications emphasize high-impact journals such as Frontiers in Microbiology and Microorganisms, with a focus on translating microbial insights into actionable strategies for improving animal health and productivity.
