Ryan Page is an Assistant Professor of Sound Design in the Electronic Production and Design (EPD) department at Berklee College of Music. He holds a Ph.D. in Digital Media from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), an M.F.A. in Electronic Music from Mills College, and a B.A. in New Media from the University of Maine. His work bridges academic research, electronic music composition, and technological innovation in sound design.
- Ph.D. in Digital Media, University of California, Santa Cruz
- M.F.A. in Electronic Music, Mills College
- B.A. in New Media, University of Maine
His research and artistic practice focus on the intersection of human perception and technology, particularly the limitations and ideological biases embedded in communication media. He explores how these qualities can be simulated and critically examined through electronic music production, instrument design, and interactive installations. His work often incorporates deprecated technologies to interrogate contemporary digital culture.
While no formal list of publications is provided, his creative output includes compositions featured in exhibitions like What Is an Image? hosted by the International Visual Sociology Association, film scores, video game soundtracks (notably for The Sims 4: Get Famous), and modular synthesizer development. His work reflects a consistent engagement with experimental sound, media archaeology, and the philosophical underpinnings of musical technology.
His achievements have been recognized with several awards:
- Phi Beta Kappa Northern California Scholarship
- Frog Peak Collective Experimental Music Award (for M.F.A. thesis “Ideology as Material Force”)
- Santa Cruz Arts Council Grant "Call for Scores/Fall Program Series"
Ryan Page is dedicated to mentoring students in critical and technical approaches to music technology. His pedagogical philosophy emphasizes understanding the social, historical, and philosophical contexts of technology rather than merely mastering its use. He has advised and collaborated with emerging artists and has contributed to academic and industry projects involving audio software and hardware development. He has also served as a beta tester for synthesizer manufacturers like Make Noise and SSF.
He is the founder of the artistic project Repairer of Reputations, which produces experimental music, short films, and custom instruments. In 2018/2019, he co-founded the electronic instrument company Magus Instrumentalis with David Kant, Madison Heying, and Mustafa Walker. He has designed instruments for Keith McMillen Instruments and developed audio/visual interactive exhibits for the California Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Art and Design in New York.
