Ryan Mott serves as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Emmanuel College, where he teaches core courses including Ethics at Work, Problems in Philosophy, and Philosophy of Law. A Boston native, he returned to the city after academic appointments in Colorado and Wisconsin, bringing expertise in political philosophy and applied ethics to Emmanuel's community-focused environment.
His educational credentials include:
- Ph.D. and M.A. in Philosophy from University of Colorado, Boulder
- M.A. in Critical & Creative Thinking from University of Massachusetts, Boston
- B.A. in Philosophy from Wheaton College
Mott's research critically examines state power justification, political obligation, and human rights frameworks. He notably investigates the moral permissibility of political assassination and UAV warfare, arguing these methods can be ethically superior to conventional warfare when adhering to just war principles—though he emphasizes current implementations often fail moral scrutiny. His work bridges theoretical political philosophy with urgent real-world ethical dilemmas.
Professional recognition includes:
- 2013 ASACCU award for mission integration leadership in Marquette University's Dorothy Day Social Justice Living-Learning Community
As an educator, Mott passionately demonstrates philosophy's relevance to daily life, with upcoming courses planned in Health Care Ethics and Political Philosophy. He values Emmanuel's student-centered mission and community atmosphere, while maintaining personal interests in blues/rock music, snowboarding, and family life with his partner and children.
