Ryan Hobbs, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Department of Cell and Biological Systems at Penn State University College of Medicine, and a member of the Penn State Cancer Institute's Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis program. His research focuses on understanding how skin keratinocytes respond to various stressors at cellular and molecular levels, with implications for multiple skin disorders.
Education:
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Johns Hopkins University (2017)
- PhD in Life Sciences (Cellular and Molecular Biology), Northwestern University (2010)
- BS in Biochemistry, University of Missouri in Columbia (2004)
- AB in Microbiology, University of Missouri in Columbia (2004)
Dr. Hobbs' laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying skin disorders including non-melanoma skin cancers, alopecia, vitiligo, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. A major focus is on the autoimmune regulator (Aire) in skin keratinocytes, exploring its expression and function in response to acute and chronic stressors. His work connects Aire deficiency to skin abnormalities seen in APECED patients, including hair loss, nail dystrophy, and vitiligo.
Analysis of Dr. Hobbs' recent publications reveals a strong focus on skin cancer mechanisms, autoimmune skin disorders, and molecular signaling pathways. His research spans dermatology, immunology, and cancer biology, with particular emphasis on the role of Aire in skin homeostasis and disease. The publications demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach connecting basic molecular mechanisms with clinical dermatological conditions.
Scientific Awards:
- Junior Faculty Research Scholar Award (2018)
- Research Career Development Award (2018)
Dr. Hobbs actively teaches dermatology residents in the Basic Science of Skin Discussion series, M1 MD/PhD students in Biological Basis of Human Health and Disease (BMS 506B), and PhD students in Cancer Biology Colloquium (BMS 597) and Concepts in Immunology (MICRO560). He also serves as a co-representative of the Department of Dermatology to the College of Medicine's Diversity and Inclusion Council, demonstrating commitment to both academic excellence and institutional diversity initiatives.
His research program maintains strong connections with the Penn State Cancer Institute, focusing on mechanisms of carcinogenesis, particularly as they relate to skin cancer development and progression. The laboratory appears to collaborate extensively with researchers across multiple departments, as evidenced by co-authorship on diverse projects spanning dermatology, cancer biology, and even cardiovascular research.
