Ryan Hobbs

Ryan Hobbs, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Department of Cell and Biological Systems at Penn State University College of Medicine, and a member of the Penn State Cancer Institute's Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis program. His research focuses on understanding how skin keratinocytes respond to various stressors at cellular and molecular levels, with implications for multiple skin disorders.

Dr. Hobbs' laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying skin disorders including non-melanoma skin cancers, alopecia, vitiligo, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. A major focus is on the autoimmune regulator (Aire) in skin keratinocytes, exploring its expression and function in response to acute and chronic stressors. His work connects Aire deficiency to skin abnormalities seen in APECED patients, including hair loss, nail dystrophy, and vitiligo.
