Ryan Gibson is an Associate Professor and Libro Professor in Regional Economic Development at the University of Guelph's School of Environmental Design and Rural Development. He holds academic appointments at Saint Mary’s University, Brandon University, and the University of Prince Edward Island. His research focuses on rural and regional development, governance, philanthropy, and public policy, with an emphasis on community-engaged approaches to sustainable rural livelihoods.
Educated at Brandon University (B.A., M.R.D.) and Memorial University (PhD in Economic Geography), Gibson has led projects funded by organizations like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance. His work addresses labor shortages, newcomer integration, rural transit, and community investment programs.
He has provided expert testimony to governments in Canada, Scotland, and Sweden, and serves as a past president of the Canadian Community Economic Development Network and Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation. Current initiatives include 'Addressing Labour Shortages through Newcomer Attraction' and 'Rural Economic Development Knowledge Translation and Transfer.'
Gibson advises numerous graduate students across Rural Studies and Planning programs and collaborates with institutions like the Rural Development Institute and the North Atlantic Forum. His research bridges academic knowledge with practical solutions for rural resilience and equity.
