Ryan Flanagan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in English/Creative Nonfiction from the University of North Texas (2015), an M.A. in Writing Arts from Rowan University (2007), and a B.A. in Philosophy from Stockton University (2005).
His research focuses on literary analysis of 19th-century drama, creative nonfiction, and rhetorical pedagogy. Notable publications include studies on Oscar Wilde's dramatic techniques and experimental narrative forms in contemporary essays. Flanagan has received the Rhetoric Program Award for Excellence in Writing Instruction twice (2019, 2016) and the Montana Prize in Creative Nonfiction (2011).
Professional grants include residencies at the Edward F. Albee Foundation (2013, 2016), New York Mills Cultural Center (2015), and Prairie Center of the Arts (2013). His work bridges academic literary analysis with creative writing practices, emphasizing narrative innovation and rhetorical clarity in teaching.
