Ryan Calder is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Health and Policy in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech. His research bridges ecological modeling, human health risk assessment, and decision science to address environmental and health impacts of infrastructure projects linked to energy transitions. He holds professional engineering licenses in Nevada and Quebec.
- Education: ScD in Environmental Health (Harvard University, 2017), MASc and BEng in Civil Engineering (Concordia University, 2012/2010).
Research focuses on improving predictive models for environmental and health outcomes of civil infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on policy development grounded in scientific evidence. His work supports science-based decision-making for sustainable energy transitions.
Professional experience includes postdoctoral roles at Duke University (2017–2020) and Harvard (2017–2014), as well as engineering practice at GHD (2008–2012) and the Quebec Ministry of Environment (2007).
He leads the Calder Lab: Models for Environmental Health and Policy, advancing interdisciplinary approaches to complex environmental challenges.
