Ryan Boehm is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Classical Studies at Tulane University, holding the Sizeler Family Professorship in Judaic Studies (2020-2023). He specializes in ancient history and Mediterranean archaeology, focusing on Hellenistic urbanization, religious practices, and imperial dynamics. His research integrates archaeological fieldwork with textual analysis, particularly in regions like Hellenistic Asia Minor and Thrace.
Education: Ph.D. (2011), M.A. (2005), and B.A. (2002) in History/Classical Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
Research interests include synoikismos (city-merging processes), the intersection of religion and community identity, and the transition between Achaemenid and Hellenistic empires. He has conducted archaeological fieldwork at Ashkelon (Israel), Corinth, Nemea, and Tel Dor, serving as a supervisor and publication lead.
Teaching includes courses on Greek tyranny/democracy, Herodotos, Plato, and Jews in the Greco-Roman world. His awards include the Loeb Fellowship and Fulbright Grant. He actively contributes to academic conferences, presenting on topics like urbanization, cultic practices, and archaeological findings in Mediterranean contexts.
