Ryan Baker

Ryan Baker is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (GSE), with primary appointment in the Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Division. He also holds affiliations with the Department of Computer and Information Science and courtesy appointments at the University of South Australia, University of Edinburgh, and Ashoka University. He directs the Penn Center for Learning Analytics and leads the online Master’s in Learning Analytics program.

His research focuses on Educational Data Mining (EDM), Learning Analytics, and Learning Engineering, with emphasis on disengagement behaviors, algorithmic bias, and quantitative ethnography. He pioneered detectors for student affect (e.g., gaming the system, off-task behavior) using digital interaction data and co-developed frameworks like the Baker Rodrigo Ocumpaugh Monitoring Protocol (BROMP).

Baker’s work bridges theory and practice, including projects like JeepyTA (a learning platform) and the Algorithmic Bias in Education Wiki. He co-leads training programs like the LASER Institute and authored influential papers, including a Test of Time Award-winning 2009 EDM review.
