Laurence Baker is the Josephine Knotts Knowles Professor of Human Biology and a Professor (by courtesy) of Economics at Stanford University. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. His academic focus lies in Health Care Policy, with expertise in healthcare economics, policy analysis, and institutional dynamics. Baker holds a PhD and MA in Economics from Princeton University (1994).
His research explores topics such as price transparency in healthcare, opioid prescribing behaviors, surgical outcomes, and the impact of legislation on healthcare costs. Notable areas include analyzing the effects of balance billing laws, Medicare/Medicaid policies, and the economic implications of clinical trials. He has contributed to studies on healthcare access disparities, particularly regarding genomic testing and prescription drug subsidies.
Baker’s work frequently integrates quantitative methods to assess healthcare systems, provider practices, and patient outcomes.
