Ruyue Zhang is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) within the Precision Psychiatry research group led by Lu Yi. She also maintains a visiting researcher position at the Department of Genetics, UNC Chapel Hill. Her primary research focuses on psychiatric genetics and epidemiology, with particular emphasis on genetic risk factors for severe mental disorders and their clinical applications.
Education:
- PhD in Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet (2022)
- Master of Medical Science (120 Credits), Karolinska Institutet (2018)
- Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, Fudan University (2015)
Dr. Zhang's research program centers on psychiatric genetics with specific expertise in polygenic risk score development and application. Her work investigates genetic correlations between eating disorders and other psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, as well as metabolic comorbidities. She employs large-scale genomic datasets including the UK Biobank and Swedish national registries to uncover shared etiological factors across disorders. Her current focus includes improving clinical utility of polygenic risk scores for severe mental disorders and predicting suicidal risk in eating disorder populations.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a strong trajectory in psychiatric genomics with increasing focus on translational applications. Her work consistently bridges genetic discovery with clinical psychiatry, particularly through the lens of eating disorders as a model for understanding psychiatric comorbidity. Recent publications demonstrate growing emphasis on cross-disorder analyses and methodological innovations in polygenic scoring.
Research Funding:
- "Improving the clinical utility of Polygenic Risk Score for Severe Mental Disorders" (Karolinska Institutet, 2025-2026)
- "Towards predicting suicidal risk in people with eating disorders: the roles of clinical presentation and genetic risk" (Fonden för Psykisk Hälsa, 2024-2025)
- "Improving Polygenic Prediction for Psychiatric Disorders for Clinical Use" (Swedish Research Council, 2022-2025)
Dr. Zhang contributes significantly to academic training through university teaching in statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology at both UNC Chapel Hill and Karolinska Institutet. She is actively involved in the Precision Psychiatry research group at MEB, which focuses on translating genetic findings into clinical applications for mental health disorders. Her collaborative network spans multiple international consortia focused on eating disorders and psychiatric genomics.
