Ruwan van der Iest is a Lecturer in the Department of Jewish, Christian and Islamic Origins at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society. His research focuses on Judean cultural identity in 5th century BCE Egypt, leveraging Aramaic legal texts from Elephantine Island. He holds a PhD from the University of Groningen, evidenced by his 2023 thesis on this topic.
Key research interests include ancient legal systems, cultural identity formation in diasporic communities, and the intersection of religion and law in antiquity. His work engages with topics like Aramaic language use, Persian period Egyptian sociopolitical structures, and the dynamics of Judean communities within broader imperial contexts.
Van der Iest has presented academic lectures on 'The Language of Law in Ancient Documents' (2018) and 'Me and You and Everyone We Know: The Identity of the Judeans of Elephantine, in Relation to the "Other"' (2019).
