Hanne van der Iest is an Instructor in the Department of Sociology at the University of South Carolina's McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. With a background spanning sociology and anthropology, her research examines cooperation in social networks, attitude/behavior transmission, and network methodologies. She has developed distributed learning initiatives and leads online course development.
Education includes:
- M.A. in Anthropology from Emory University (2014)
- M.S. in Evolutionary Anthropology from University of Oxford (2010)
- B.S. in Sociology from University of Groningen (2009)
Her research investigates social network structures and cooperation mechanisms, with publications examining third-party effects in social dilemmas and hormonal influences on game-theoretical behavior. Current projects explore network-based approaches to studying cooperation in community contexts.
Van der Iest has secured over $55,000 in grants for distributed learning innovation, including development of online sociology courses and summer minors. She co-chairs the College of Arts and Sciences DL Advisory Board and produces faculty interview series to enhance student engagement in online courses.
