Ruthe Foushee is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research and Director of the Human Language and Development Lab. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from UC Berkeley (2020) and a BA in Linguistics from Harvard College (2013). Her research investigates language acquisition resilience across diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts, focusing on infants' universal language learning mechanisms and adults' communicative success. She employs experimental and observational methods in rural and multilingual settings to explore social-cognitive foundations of communication.
Professional affiliations include Cognitive Development Society, Society for Research in Child Development, and Linguistics Society of America. Recent work highlights cross-cultural language development patterns and socioeconomic influences on early communication. Future courses include Advanced Topics in Language Development and Sociolinguistic Development.
Her lab emphasizes ecological validity, studying populations ranging from Tseltal Maya communities to industrialized societies.
