He holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from UC Merced and a B.A. in Psychology from CSU Dominguez Hills. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Manitoba, he joined CSUEB where he directs the Babies, Behavior, and Early Language Lab (BaBEL).
His research focuses on psycholinguistics and cognitive development, particularly exploring how children learn language across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. He investigates cross-linguistic influences on developmental pathways, the role of AI in Early Childhood Education, and the intersection of technology with child development. He teaches courses on Infant & Child Development and Child Language Development, emphasizing inclusive and community-engaged approaches.
Bunce’s work includes developing cross-cultural annotation systems for infant language studies and evaluating tools like the Language Environment Analysis (LENA) system. His recent research spans topics such as structural repetitions in lexical categories, adult perception of child-directed speech, and automated word count estimation in multilingual environments. His findings highlight the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity in shaping early language experiences.
While no formal scientific awards are listed, his contributions to developmental psychology and psycholinguistics are evident through his extensive publication record and lab initiatives. He advises students in the BaBEL Lab, which focuses on language and cognitive development research in young children, fostering both academic and community-oriented projects.
