Ruth Watson is an Associate Professor in African History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Clare College. Her research focuses on Yoruba urban history, colonialism, and social dynamics in Africa. She holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, where her thesis examined chieftaincy in Ibadan. Her work bridges historical analysis with cultural studies, emphasizing archival sources like diaries and material culture.
Education: Primary and secondary education in Ile-Ife, Nigeria; D.Phil. in Imperial History from Oxford. Current roles include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on African history, including a popular MPhil option on 'Crowds in World History'.
Research Interests: Urbanization in colonial Yorubaland, the role of diaries in documenting colonial life, and the global historical significance of 'crowd' phenomena. She has pioneered studies on respectability in colonial Ibadan and the interplay between military heritage and civic identity.
Advising: Supervises three PhD students on topics ranging from radio in East Africa to gender and railways in Zimbabwe. Previously mentored research on Lagos architecture and Nigerian soldiers in WWII. Active in promoting interdisciplinary historical approaches.
Publications: Over a dozen journal articles and book chapters, including her acclaimed monograph 'Civil Disorder is the Disease of Ibadan' (2003). Recent work explores literary culture in colonial Nigeria and global crowd dynamics.
