Ayotola Tehingbola is a PhD Candidate in English and Creative Writing with a Women and Gender Studies minor at the University of Missouri, Columbia, serving as a Graduate Instructor. Her multidisciplinary work bridges creative practice and academic inquiry at the intersections of colonialism, womanhood, and African historical narratives.
Her educational trajectory includes:
- LL.B. in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University (2015)
- B.L. Qualifying Certificate from Nigerian Law School Lagos (2016)
- M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Boise State University (2024)
Tehingbola's creative scholarship interrogates colonial legacies through the lens of the Yorùbá Empire and Portuguese/British colonial history in Nigeria, weaving social oppression, mythical realities, and alternate futures into her narratives. Her work centers African diasporic experiences while challenging Eurocentric historical frameworks through literary innovation and cultural reclamation.
Her publications across premier journals like Witness and CRAFT reveal consistent thematic threads: the subversive power of Nigerian Pidgin, familial resistance under oppression, and Yoruba spiritual cosmology. These works form a cohesive body exploring identity fragmentation and cultural continuity in postcolonial contexts.
Prestigious recognition includes:
- Three-time Glenn Bach Award for Fiction (2022-2024)
- Graywolf Press African Fiction Prize Finalist (2023)
- Kimbilio Fellowship and Presidential Scholar Award (2024)
- Multiple Pushcart and Best of the Net nominations
Her creative development has been sustained by major institutional support including the Lagos International Poetry Festival, Hudson Valley Writers Center, GrubStreet, and Kimbilio for Black Fiction. As an active PhD candidate, she continues to expand her scholarly-creative portfolio with a novel manuscript shortlisted for a significant debut fiction prize.
Tehingbola actively engages literary communities through writing centers and festivals, though no formal research labs are documented in her current academic trajectory.
