Dr Ruth Purvis is a NCAS Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of York, working within the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories. Her research focuses on air quality, oil and gas emissions (both onshore and offshore), and environmental baseline monitoring related to hydraulic fracturing activities. She has led independent environmental baseline studies in the Vale of Pickering and Lancashire, collaborating with institutions like BGS, PHE, and other universities.
Education:
- PhD in Chemistry (University of Leeds, focus on non-methane hydrocarbons in the free troposphere)
- Postdoctoral Researcher (University of York)
- Atmospheric Chemist (Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements)
Research Interests: Combining airborne measurements, ground-based monitoring, and collaborative environmental assessments to evaluate emissions from energy extraction and urban sources. Current projects include North Sea offshore emissions and pre-fracking environmental impacts. She also advocates for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in science through her role as Head of EDI at NCAS.
Grants/Projects:
- MLU-C-058 MAMAP 2D feasibility study (NERC-funded)
- GRIM-SAF (NERC-funded collaborative project)
- Offshore Emissions Monitoring (North Sea)
Labs/Teams: Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (York), NCAS collaborative network.
