Ruth Nugent is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of History, Anthropology and Philosophy at Augusta University's Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in History from Dalhousie University (2000) and a B.A. in History from Franklin College of Indiana (1993). Her research focuses on gender, race, and pop culture analysis with a particular emphasis on comic books and their historical contexts, including studies of Wonder Woman's representation in the Golden Age and Cold War eras. She has been recognized for teaching excellence with multiple awards including 'Caught in the Act of Great Teaching' (2016) and 'Most Valuable Professor' accolades (2010, 2008).
Her scholarship bridges historical inquiry with contemporary cultural critique, examining themes like feminist critique in superhero narratives and the intersection of nostalgia with gender norms in 20th century media. Beyond academia, she has contributed to public outreach through initiatives like Women's History Month Film Series organization and community service roles in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta.
Nugent's service record includes leadership roles such as Chair of the Classroom Refresh Working Group and membership in Augusta University's Pamplin Dean's Faculty Council.
