Ruth Hogg is a Professor at Queen's University Belfast's School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Public Health. She leads the Eye component of the NICOLA study and has held roles including co-ordinator of the 'The eye as the window to the body' module. Her research focuses on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, with an emphasis on epidemiology, biomarker discovery, and dietary interventions. She has supervised multiple PhD students and holds grants for projects like 'Reticular pseudodrusen in AMD' and 'Evaluation of novel cardiovascular risk indicators'.
Education and Career: PhD in Macular Pigment and Visual Function (2005), Australian Bicentennial Fellowship (2006 at University of Melbourne), Postdoc at Cambridge's Department of Experimental Psychology (PERGENIC project). Awards include the Neil Charman Medal (2019) and Gordan Research Travel Award (2004).
Research interests span ocular aging, genetic influences on visual function, and innovative technologies for eye disease monitoring (e.g., VR headsets, handheld OCT). She explores dietary links to AMD and diabetic retinopathy progression, aiming to develop early detection methods and prognostic tools. Recent projects include MONARCH (home monitoring for nAMD) and deep learning applications in retinal imaging.
Publications focus on AMD biomarkers, stroke risk prediction via deep learning, and diabetic kidney disease diagnostics. She actively participates in international conferences, peer review, and policy committees. Media engagements include BBC Radio 4's Inside Health and the Macular Society's Northern Ireland event.
