Ruth Hellier-Tinoco is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), with affiliations in Theater and Dance, Feminist Studies, and Latin American and Iberian Studies. She co-convenes the Performance & Politics Research Focus Group and has a dual background in performance and academia. Her interdisciplinary work bridges ethnomusicology, performance studies, and Latin American cultural analysis. She holds a PhD from Birmingham Conservatoire and has extensive experience as a performer, educator, and community arts facilitator. Previously, she taught at the University of Winchester, directing the InterAct Theatre Workshop for adults with learning disabilities.
Her research focuses on experimental performance, Mexican theater/music/dance traditions, and the interplay between tourism, nationalism, and cultural representation. Key publications include Embodying Mexico: Tourism, Nationalism, and Performance (2011) and Women Singers in Global Contexts (2013). Her creative work includes the solo theater piece Pre-now-post: una trilogía, performed at Stanford’s Nitery Theatre.
Dr. Hellier-Tinoco’s teaching spans topics such as experimental performance creation, Mexican theater politics, and Latin American studies. She sits on the Board of Directors for the Congress on Research in Dance and has contributed to numerous edited volumes and journals, including Performance Research and Cambridge Encyclopedia of Actors and Acting.
