Jonah Francese is a Lecturer at the University of Chicago's Department of Music. His research focuses on Indigenous language hip hop, Chicano rap, Black dance traditions, jazz improvisation, Mexican eco-tourism music, and Afro-Mexican musical practices. He leads an 18-piece big band (Thinkin' Big) with four albums, including the internationally-toured 'Reclamation.' As a trumpet player, he has performed with John Tesh, Nella (2018 Latin Grammy winner), and opened for Salt-N-Pepa.
- Education: BA in jazz composition and trumpet performance from Berklee College of Music; MA in Ethnomusicology from University of Chicago
- Teaching: Courses include MUS 10200/CRES 10200 (Introduction to World Music) and MUSI 23300 (Social/Cultural Study of Music)
- Current Projects: Developing a Latin big band album reimagining ranchera, bachata, and reggaetón
He coordinated the EthNoise! workshop series (2022-2023) and maintains active performance collaborations across genres and cultures.
