Ruth Crawford Mitchell was a lecturer of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh (1922–1956), specializing in immigrant history and genealogy. She earned a Vassar BA (1912) and a master’s in social work from Washington University (St. Louis). Her career included founding Czechoslovakia’s first social work school (1919), directing the United Nations Relief & Rehabilitation Agency in Egypt (1944–1946), and overseeing the Nationality Classrooms project at Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning (1926–1956). She revived the legacy of Elena Cornaro Piscopia, the first female philosophy doctorate recipient, through scholarship and global commemorations (1968–1978).
