Donald J. Olsen was a Professor of History at Vassar College, holding the Eloise Ellery Chair from 1970 until his retirement in 1994. He earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. from Yale University (1954). His research focused on urban cultural history, particularly British and European cities, and Australian urban development. Olsen authored seminal works, including The City as a Work of Art: London, Paris, Vienna (1986), which won the 1987 British Council Prize in the Humanities. He also published Town Planning in London (1964), funded by a 1959 Fulbright Fellowship. He taught courses on English history, medieval/Tudor England, and Georgian England, and advised students with enthusiasm.
Awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships (1967 and 1979), Olsen’s work blended architectural and political analysis. Beyond academia, he was an adventurous traveler despite living with spina bifida, using crutches and later a wheelchair. His article Domestic Manners of the Australians exemplified his intellectual approach to travel, comparing Australian urban landscapes to British heritage.
Olsen’s legacy includes memberships in the American Historical Association, Society of Architectural Historians, and editorial roles at The London Journal. His contributions were recognized in Who’s Who in America (1975). He passed away in 1997 at age 68.
