Dr. Ruth Carmi serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology within the College of Arts & Sciences at Appalachian State University, joining the institution in 2023. Her interdisciplinary work bridges sociological theory, legal frameworks, and peace studies with a critical focus on systemic inequalities.
Her educational foundation includes:
- Ph.D. in Sociology & Peace Studies and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame
- LL.M in International Legal Studies (Human Rights and Gender specialization) from American University Washington College of Law

Dr. Carmi's research investigates how intersecting systems of inequality—gender, race, class, heteronormativity, and militarism—shape societal structures, particularly within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israel's welfare state decline. Her unique perspective integrates theoretical analysis with practical insights from her prior career as a human-rights lawyer in Israel, emphasizing real-world applications of sociological concepts.
Her teaching portfolio features courses like SOC 2850 (Constructions of Gender), SOC 3320 (Conflict Resolution), SOC 4150 (Sociology of Law), and SOC 4250 (Constructing Bodies and Sexualities), all designed to connect global theoretical frameworks to contemporary social issues through an international lens.
