Ruth Carden is a part-time Research Fellow at the School of Archaeology, University College Dublin (UCD), with appointments from October 2024 to 2026. Previously, she held roles as Adjunct Research Fellow (2017–2022) and Research Scientist (2022–2024) at UCD. Her research focuses on zooarchaeology, palaeoecology, and Quaternary faunal studies, with a multidisciplinary approach combining GIS, statistical analysis, and morphometrics. She has contributed to projects like the Irish Cave Bones Project and co-leads the Viking-Age and Medieval Dogs & Horses Project.
Education: BSc and PhD from University College Dublin.
Research Interests: Human-animal relationships in prehistory, deer ecology, and the application of advanced techniques like 3D scanning and geometric morphometrics. Key projects include studying the palaeoenvironment of Ireland, the origins of domesticated species, and the first evidence of Palaeolithic human presence in Ireland.
Professional Activities: Editor for International Journal of Osteoarchaeology and EXARC; member of IUCN Deer Specialist Group and International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ). Active in peer-review and international collaborations.
Grants & Collaborations: Funded projects include the IRC COALESCE INSTAR+ Irish Cave Bones Project (2022–2024). Co-supervises PhD students in archaeological and ecological studies.
Labs/Teams: Involved in multidisciplinary teams for cave excavations, zooarchaeological analysis, and deer ecology research.
