Russell Qualls is Associate Professor at University of Idaho's College of Engineering (Chemical & Biological Engineering department) and serves as Idaho State Climatologist. His research advances evaporation theory, snow hydrology, and climate-water resource interactions using remote sensing and modeling.
Education: PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Cornell University (1994), BS in Civil Engineering from University of Washington.
Research: Develops theoretical frameworks for evaporation (e.g., complementary relationship models), analyzes snowmelt patterns via MODIS data, and studies climate change impacts on Northwest water resources. Recent work challenges conventional evaporation parameterization and examines land-atmosphere feedbacks in warming climates.
Teaching: Courses include BE 450 (Environmental Hydrology) and BE 453/553 (Northwest Climate and Water Resources Change), emphasizing practical applications of hydrological theory.
