Russell J Leng is a Sessional Instructor of Art + Design at Trinity Western University’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture. His artistic practice explores themes of interconnectedness, longing, and loss through painting and interdisciplinary approaches. Leng holds an MFA from the University of Edinburgh (2013) and a BA from TWU (2009). His works have been exhibited globally, including venues in Canada, the UK, Germany, and Taiwan. He was shortlisted for the RBC Painting Prize (2015) and awarded the Surrey Art Gallery Painting Prize (2009).

Research Interests
Leng’s practice interrogates the boundaries of painting as a medium, investigating how visual forms can articulate complex emotional and social dynamics. His work often merges abstract and figurative elements to explore themes of memory, cultural identity, and human connection. He experiments with layered compositions and material textures to create immersive, metaphorical spaces.
Exhibitions & Awards
Recent highlights include solo exhibitions at SAMC Gallery (Langley, 2024) and Carry On at Portal Gallery (Vancouver, 2024). He has participated in major group exhibitions such as the Fraser Valley Biennial (2021–2023) and the RBC Painting Competition (2015). Awards include a Canada Council for the Arts Travel Grant (2019) and multiple shortlist recognitions in international competitions.
Teaching
Leng teaches courses in visual foundations, painting techniques, and art practicum at TWU, emphasizing hands-on exploration and critical discourse. Courses include ART 181/182 (Visual Foundations), ART 221 (Painting I), and ART 495 (Honours Project Mentoring).
