Russell Hamilton

Russell Hamilton is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Art and Design at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), holding a dual background in Sculpture (MFA, University of Washington) and Political Science (BA, University of Minnesota). He has held academic roles at Zayed University (UAE, 2002–2020) and Wayne State University (Detroit), specializing in 3D design, sculpture, and interdisciplinary art education. His work bridges cultural critique and community engagement, addressing themes of migration, identity, and global interconnectedness through public art installations and residencies.

Education highlights include residencies at the Studio Museum in Harlem (1993–94), Skowhegan School (1990 and 2021), and Obama City, Japan (2011). He has exhibited globally, including solo shows in Chicago, Venice, and Indonesia, with works in public collections such as the Sharjah Art Museum and RAK Hospital. Awards include the Skowhegan Alumni Award (2021), Ideas with Impact Award (2013), and Olsen Memorial Fellowship (2000).

His research explores art’s role in societal discourse through projects like the 'An Empirical Voice' series (cultural identity and religion) and 'Im-Migrant' series (migration narratives). Hamilton has curated public art initiatives in Abu Dhabi, including the My City Centre Masdar Mural Project, and led community-based programs focusing on art education and urban sustainability.
