Russell Evans is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Society and Culture at the University of Plymouth. His academic background includes a PhD in visual and diagram poetry, with research interests spanning visual poetry, creative nonfiction, AI applications in poetry, and therapeutic uses of poetry comics. He also explores community trauma and personal histories through visual and textual mediums.
Evans has extensive professional experience as a freelance writer for UK consumer magazines and The Guardian, focusing on film and media. He authored two books on filmmaking published by Focal Press (Routledge), which were translated into Spanish. His artwork has been exhibited in the UK, Italy, and New York, and he is a member of the Blue Door Art Center (Yonkers, NY) and ArtSpeak poetry group.
His teaching responsibilities include contributing to the MA Creative Writing program and leading modules such as Craft of Writing 2 and Feature Writing (ENGL618). Beyond academia, he works with marginalized youth facing societal exclusion due to criminality or addiction.
Recent publications include poetry comics in Heavy Feather Review (2022), 3AM magazine (November 2022), and CWP Journal (Fall 2022).
Evans maintains active involvement in artistic and literary communities, advocating for interdisciplinary creative practices and community engagement through the arts.
