Russell Collighan is a Lecturer in Molecular Biology at Aston University's School of Biosciences, affiliated with the College of Health and Life Sciences. He is part of the Biosciences Research Group (BRG), Research Centre for the Humanities, and Aston Research Centre for Health in Ageing. His research focuses on transglutaminase enzymes' roles in microbial pathogenesis and medical applications. Dr. Collighan holds a PhD (1996) and BSc (1992) in Biochemistry from the University of Nottingham.
His academic journey includes roles as a Research Fellow at Aston University (2004-2009) and Nottingham Trent University (1999-2004), and a Higher Scientific Officer at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (1996-1999).
Research interests include transglutaminase-mediated protein cross-linking in bacteria like Clostridium difficile and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with applications in developing antimicrobial strategies and biomaterials for medical use. Recent work explores enzyme inhibition for infection control and tissue repair.
Notable contributions include studies on Porphyromonas gingivalis pathogenesis and collagen-based biomaterials for bone healing. His work has been cited over 150 times and featured in 32 news outlets.
